What is Facia?

Facia connects all connective tissues (consisting of the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood), holding the entire body together. Facia is an organ in its own rite, sitting just under the skin, and is surrounded by a gel caused ground substance. It has viscoelastic properties which means its sometimes viscous, like honey, while others stretchy as elastic. When healthy, its purpose is reduce friction of muscular force. Facia supports the nerves and blood vessels as they pass through and in between muscles, and are frequently inverted by sensory nerve endings.

When your facia is healthy, you have...

  • Increased blood flow, in turn faster excessive recovery
  • Improved alignment
  • Reduced appearance of stretch marks
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Peak performance
  • Less day to day pain

What then causes unhealthy facia?

  • Dehydration
  • Stress
  • Poor sleeping quality
  • Trauma
  • Bad posture
  • Seditary lifestyle

Facia plays a huge role in the support and function of our bodies., since it does support and and attaches to all structures. Wavy in configuration the tissue is relaxed, while tight and restricted when compromised. The tissue looses pliability when there is physical trauma, emotional trauma, inflammation, and scarring. The facia becomes tight and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Trauma from an accident, a fall, stress, bad posture, whiplash, resulting in pressure and all kind of painful symptoms. Our flexibility is then compromised and that is the key factor in the quality of our daily performance. The amount of energy the body is using to maintain balance is taxing causing the nervous system to work overtime. Yoga, deep stretching, and massage will help the body open up and assist in restoring your body to  wholeness. That is the goal isn't it?:)
